Navigating Generational Differences: Lessons Learned from My Boomer Father as a Gen Z Individual
As a member of Gen Z with a boomer father, I’ve had the unique experience of navigating the generational differences that come with having a parent from a different era. While our perspectives on technology, work ethic, and mental health may differ, I’ve come to appreciate the valuable lessons and insights my father has imparted on me.
Growing up, my father’s age always stood out among my friends’ dads. But as I got older, I realized that his wisdom and life experiences were invaluable. He taught me the importance of hard work and instilled in me a sense of responsibility and agency. While our views on technology may clash at times, our discussions have led to enriching conversations that have broadened my understanding of the world.
One area where I was pleasantly surprised by my father’s views was on mental health. As a member of Gen Z, I found myself struggling with anxiety and depression during the pandemic, while my father’s boomer values initially seemed out of step with my own understanding of mental health. However, his holistic approach to wellness, centered on maintaining physical health, building strong relationships, and finding joy in simple pleasures, became a lifeline for me during those challenging times.
Through teaching and learning from each other, my father and I have built a relationship grounded in mutual respect and understanding. Despite our generational differences, I’ve come to appreciate the unique perspective and wisdom that comes with having a boomer father. Our relationship may not always be conventional, but it’s one that I cherish and value deeply.
