Transport Department Cracks Down on Illegal Bike Taxis in Bengaluru, Seizes 133 Vehicles: Report
Are bike taxis a menace or a convenience? This question has sparked a heated debate in Bengaluru as the Transport Department recently cracked down on 133 bike taxis in the city, deeming them illegal. This move comes in response to protests by auto-rickshaw drivers who claim that bike taxis are impacting their livelihoods.
The enforcement operation, led by C Mallikarjun, Additional Commissioner of Transport (Enforcement, South), involved confiscating 29 electric bike taxis among the impounded vehicles. The crackdown was initiated following the state government’s decision to scrap the Karnataka Electric Bike Taxi Scheme, 2021, citing widespread misuse.
Despite previous restraint due to a court order, the department took action against bike taxis operated by services like OLA, Rapido, and Uber, which were using personal vehicles with white registration plates. Violators now face penalties starting at ₹5,000 and vehicle impoundment.
The Bike Taxi Welfare Association in Karnataka has voiced their opinion on the issue, stating that their operations are protected under court orders. However, the crackdown continues as the state transport department aims to regulate the use of bike taxis in the city.
The debate between convenience and legality rages on as Bengaluru residents navigate the changing landscape of transportation options. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you believe bike taxis should be allowed to operate in the city, or do you support the crackdown on illegal services?
