Nigerian households and businesses struggle with expenses, promote agriculture – Worldstage

Rising Food Prices in Nigeria: A Burden on Households and Businesses

The relentless surge in food prices in Nigeria has become a pressing issue affecting households and businesses across the country. The latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows a significant increase in inflation rates, particularly in food and non-alcoholic beverage costs.

For many families, the rising cost of food has forced them to make difficult choices. Mothers like Feyisayo Omon and Maria Ose shared their struggles of not being able to provide three square meals a day for their families. Even with a decent salary, the high prices at the market make it challenging to afford basic necessities.

Yemi Olarenwaju, a teacher and father of five, revealed that his family now eats only once a day to make ends meet. The situation has become so dire that even eating has become a means of survival rather than enjoyment.

Businesses in the food industry are also feeling the impact of the price hikes. Fatimah Eniola, CEO of Bint Cakes ‘n’ More, highlighted the decrease in customer patronage due to the perception of eating out as a luxury. The constant fluctuation in food prices has made it difficult for food vendors to plan and budget effectively.

Ms. Joy Onwumere, General Managing Director of Chefs Culinary Arts, emphasized the challenges faced by food vendors in doing their costing and budgeting. The unpredictability of food prices has led to businesses closing down and a decline in customer base.

Despite the grim situation, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of subsistence farming. Onwumere encouraged Nigerians to consider growing their own food to alleviate the burden of high food prices. By taking control of their food production, families can ensure a steady supply of affordable and nutritious meals.

The current food crisis in Nigeria calls for urgent intervention from the government to support struggling households and businesses. As prices continue to rise, it is essential for stakeholders to come together to find sustainable solutions to mitigate the impact of inflation on the food industry. Only through collective efforts can we hope to alleviate the burden of high food prices and ensure food security for all Nigerians.
